The Beatles Box — бокс-сет из восьми LP-грампластинок, содержащих сборники записей группы The Beatles, изданный лейблом Parlophone и World Records

The Beatles):
(в алфавитном порядке названий треков)

«Across the Universe» — (версия 2) продюсирована Филом Спектором.
«All My Loving» — начинается с пяти постукиваний Ринго по хай-хэту.
«All You Need Is Love» — моно-версия.
«And I Love Her» — на заключительном затихании (fadeout) шесть тактов акустической гитары (в «стандартной» версии четыре).
«Baby, You’re a Rich Man» — «истинно стереофоническая» версия, до того публиковалась только на выпущенной в Германии версии LP-альбома Magical Mystery Tour.
«The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill» — практически в том же миксе, что и на альбоме The Beatles («белый альбом»), за исключением вступительного гитарного облигато (opening guitar obbligato).
«A Day in the Life» — версия со сборника The Beatles 1967—1970 («синий альбом»)
«Day Tripper» — альтернативный стерео-микс (опубликован на американском альбоме Yesterday and Today).
«The End»/«Her Majesty» — пауза между двумя песнями продолжительностью только 5 секунд.
Yesterday and Today.
«I Am the Walrus» — комбинированная версия, сделанная из двух разных инженерами Capitol Records Джоном Палладино (John Palladino) и Джорджем Ирвином (George Irwin) для американской версии альбома Rarities.
«I Feel Fine» — «истинно стереофоническая» версия, начинается с постукивания барабанными палочками, шуршания (шёпота?) (whispering), кашля, а затем Ринго закрывает (опускает педалью верхнюю тарелку) хай-хэт.
«Let It Be» — (версия 2) «воспроизведено для диска» («reproduced for disc») Филом Спектором.
«Love Me Do» — (версия 1) редкая версия, с оригинального сингла, выходившего только в Великобритании, с Ринго на барабанах.
«Paperback Writer» — стерео-версия, издана на американском сборнике A Collection of Beatles Oldies.
«Penny Lane» — комбинированная версия, как и «I Am the Walrus», подготовленная для американской версии альбома Rarities.
«She Loves You» — псевдо-стерео ремикс (mock stereo remix) со сборника A Collection of Beatles Oldies.
«She’s a Woman» — «истинно стереофоническая» версия, до того была доступна только на изданиях, вышедших в Австралии и Сингапуре/Малайзии/Гонконге.
«Strawberry Fields Forever» — «истинно стереофоническая» версия.
«Thank You Girl» — оригинальная моно-версия без добавочных подыгрываний Джона на губной гармонике.
«This Boy» — моно-версия.

In true story book fashion, it all began in a very ordinary way. At a church fete in the grounds of Woolton Parish Church, Liverpool, on the 15th of June 1956. A local group was performing, more for love than money, led by a Presley-influenced young Teddy Boy called John Lennon. In the audience was another budding young singer- guitarist—fourteen- year-old Paul McCartney. After the Quarrymen had finished their act, the two of them met up, compared notes and chords, and then went their separate ways. A week later, John invited Paul to join the group. Within a few months, Paul roped in one of his schoolfriends George Harrison, and the stage was set for the incredible scenes that lay ahead. The next three or four years saw them make their first tentative steps towards what was soon to be dubbed ‘The Liverpool Sound’. After a successful audition for the impresario, Larry Parnes, they turned professional and toured Scotland as a supporting act for Parnes’ artist, Johnny Gentle. And now they called themselves ‘The Silver Beatles’. From the beat clubs of Liverpool—to the beat clubs of Hamburg! A series of residencies followed in several of Hamburg’s more notorious late-nite spots: the Indra Club, the Star Club and the Kaiserkeller. The audiences were always very loud, usually very drunk, and just about the best stamping ground for any group with ambitions of fame and fortune. Around this time, they were shuttling between these two great, cosmopolitan seaports almost at the speed of light. From Liverpool’s Cavern, and the rather more respectable Litherland Town Hall and New Brighton Tower. .. . to the beer-halls of the Reeperbahn, and their very first recording, backing local singer Tony Sheridan on a disc called ‘My Bonnie’. (This traditional song, believed to have been written in 1881, sold some 100,000 copies in Germany, and over a million world-wide by 1964.)  Then, in November 1961, a certain Raymond Jones walked into one of Liverpool's more switched-on record shops, NEMS in Whitechapel, and asked for ‘My Bonnie’ by Tony Sheridan and The Beatles. Brian Epstein, manager and son of the owner, didn’t have it in stock. This, for arecord shop that reckoned to keep its finger on the pulse, was something of a challenge. So he tracked them down to a club almost on his doorstep, The Cavern. After seeing their act, and potential, he promptly signed them up. : He arranged several auditions in London, but these came to nothing. Then Hamburg took them to her ample heart yet again, when out of the blue came the telegram that paved the way:

CONGRATULATIONS BOYS * EMI REQUEST RECORDING SESSION * PLEASE REHEARSE NEW MATERIAL *

At this point, Pete Best, the most regular of the several drummers they had had so far, left the group. To be replaced by a musician who'd made quite a name for himself in Liverpool with Rory Storme and the Hurricanes, and also run into the group in Hamburg. He promised to shave off his beard, adopt a compatible Beatles hairstyle, and change his name. Exit Richard Starkey—enter Ringo Starr!
On the 11th September 1962, at EMI’s Abbey Road studios, they cut Love Me Do and P.S. I Love You. Although it sparked off plenty of comments on the radio, here in Britain it only made number seventeen in the charts, the lowest position a Beatles release would achieve for the entire decade to come. Then came another lightning trip to Hamburg before their second visit to the Abbey Road studios to cut Please Please Me. Released in January 1963, it shot to the No. 1 spot in under a month.
From that moment on, their story is of one headline after another. First in Britain, then the USA; and then all over the world. The age of the Beatles had arrived!
After Please Please Me came From Me To You and Thank You Girl, two numbers with the group’s singular stamp all over them. Spot-on harmonies and driving instrumentatio made this single another instant hit. Their first album followed, showcasing Misery, Do You Want To Know A Secret, A Taste Of Honey, | Saw Her Standing There and Twist and Shout. Resultmore hits, more recognition in the business, and their own radio show on the Light Programme. She Loves You came out in August 1963, and soon the whole nation was joining in that catchy ‘yeah, yeah, yeah’ chorus, or so it seemed...
It Won't Be Long, Please Mr. Postman, All My Loving, Roll Over Beethoven and Money were all featured on their second album, ‘With The Beatles’. Everything about it inspired superlatives, but no superlatives in the world could possibly have done justice to the impact they had made in the space of one year: 7 million records sold in Britain alone; plus singles at Nos. 1 and 2; EPs at 1, 2 and 3, and LPs at 1 and 2—all at the same time, December 1963!

As 1963 came to aclose the ‘Fab Four’ released their next single, I Want To Hold Your Hand coupled with This Boy , which topped the British charts for six weeks and went on to sell 11 million copies world-wide! It seemed as if the Beatles were everywhere. . . every time you opened a news-Paper, or turned on a TV set, whilst in radio bulletins a new Beatles release became a major news story for that day. Their fan club may have had its roots in Liverpool but now it seemed to be flourishing in virtually every household in the land, and right across the social scale. Invited to appear in that year’s Royal Command Performance, their music was enough to steal the show on its own, but when John Lennon stepped up to the footlights and wisecracked to the audience (with a cheeky nod towards the Royal Box)
“On the next number, would those in the cheap seats clap their hands—the rest of you just rattle your jewellery” the entire audience erupted into applause. Early in 1964 came Can’t Buy Me Love backed by You Can’t Do That. This disc notched up the biggest advance sale for any single record in history (1 million in UK, over 2 million in the USA) —and there was only one way to sum up the public mood, and that was—
BEATLEMANIA!!
Next stop America. On February 7th they landed at Kennedy airport—to a reception that out-Beatled anything that had gone before. 10,000 frantic, yelling, smiling fans who gave the hardened New York cops on duty the most hairraising moments of their lives. Terminal buildings, public viewing areas, even the fringes of the runways—everywhere you looked was a mass of teenage Miss Americas, sobbing, running and jostling for the tiniest glimpse of their idols. In the days that followed, John, Paul, George and Ringo guested on Ed Sullivan’s top-rated TV show and then laid claim to Carnegie Hall. New York showered them with dollars, ticker-tape and adulation, and then the whole of America got in on the act.
For years American singing stars had called the tune, but now the tables were well and truly turned! Suddenly, if you were British, you were in. And a whole crowd of British stars like Gerry and the Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, Herman’s Hermits and many more found the American hit parade a stairway paved with gold.
It was time for Britain’s latest and greatest group to make their first film. ‘A Hard Day’s. Night’ was another medium again, and obviously quite a challenge. But, if there were any sceptics left, they should have known better, for it was a challenge the Beatles met, and passed, with ease. The title theme, A Hard Day’s Night was a perfect description of the times, and an obvious gold disc candidate from its first few opening bars. I Should Have Known Better, If I Fell, And I Love Her, Things We Said Today and I'll Be Back were other Lennon and McCartney greats specially written for the film—though, as it turned out, the plot couldn‘t accommodate all thirteen of their compositions!
In July 1964 the film opened in the West End with a Royal Film Premiere. The crowds were so big, they had to close Piccadilly Circus for the occasion!
They were collecting gold discs like there was no tomorrow and their fan mail had to be seen to be believed. And not solely from teenage girl fans either:
“I think they are lovely boys. . . Harold and I are both tremendous fans. . . and always listen to them and watch them on television. . . “Mrs. Mary Wilson.
They released Long Tall Sally, I Call Your Name, Matchbox and Slow Down on an EP in June, as a kind of “thank you” to the days of Hamburg and the Cavern, and a tribute to their original inspiration, good old American rock ‘n’ roll. Later that year came | Feel Fine and She's A Woman, just two more in a long line of hits that made them the most successful, and most sought after group of all time.

In the closing months of 1964, with Beatlemania at its crazy peak, they made a grand-slam nationwide tour of major cities, from Bradford to Bristol, Edinburgh to Exeter. . . not forgetting a sentimental stop-over in Liverpool where their concert at the Empire formed a maxi-decibel “thank-you” to all their friends and fans back home, where the whole incredible mystery tour began. And in Liverpool, just as the other cities they played, their motorcade swept into town to scenes of sheer madness and good-natured mayhem. Young girls laying siege to stage doors for days on end. . . scores of security guards and police holding back the crowds. elaborate ‘battle plans’ were the only way the four ‘Mop Tops’ could be sure of arriving and leaving in one piece! Souvenirs, badges and photographs sold in millions and, in the concert hall itself, it really didn’t matter what songs the Beatles sang, for you couldn’t hear a note above the crescendo of sobs and screams!  In November came their new album ‘Beatles For Sale’ (which became the UK’s No. 1 album in its first week of release), and album three features eight of its best remembered tracks: Eight Days A Week (which was released as a single in the USA and sold a million in just seven days), Paul’s beautiful Ill Follow The Sun, then No Reply, I’m A Loser, and Every Little Thing, followed by John
in country vein doing I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party. Finally, two numbers from their repertoire back in Hamburg days: rock ‘n’ roll classic Kansas City, and the soulful Mr. Moonlight. Into 1965 now, and the busiest year yet. In April they released Ticket To Ride which, instrumentally, was the most impressive recording to date, even if the lyrics weren‘t quite as innocent as they seemed! In the month of June, the popular press had an absolute beanfeast, with the announcement that for ‘services to export’ the four young stars would be awarded MBEs. The ‘Establishment’, or certain sections of it, were incensed. And more than a few-civil servants and war heroes returned their decorations in protest. It even took the Beatles by surprise, as a nonplussed John Lennon observed when told of the honour: “Being awarded the MBE—I can’t believe it. I thought you had to drive tanks and win wars.”A month later they released Help! and I’m Down, a sure-fire hit single to add to the pile, and help the export drive at the same time! And then came ‘Help!’ the movie, from which album three also includes The Night Before, You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away, George’s own composition I Need You, Another Girl and You’re Gonna Lose That Girl. As ‘Help!’ in both filmed and recorded versions was bursting onto the British market, the Beatles took off to wow America for the third time of asking. Before an audience of 55,000 plus they opened their tour at the famous Shea Stadium, home of the New York Mets. Even by Beatle standards, everything about this concert was on the grandest scale. From the landing by helicopter. . . to the 2000 security men on dutymore than a packed audience in the average British concert hall! America, being America, greeted them with similar scenes at every city along their route. And the Beatles became the biggest and best-loved Ambassadors that Britain had ever sent to American shores. Thanks to the Beatles, everything—from British cars like the Mini and MG; to dress designers, sportsmen, actors, and even pipesmoking politicians, became a status symbol to be seen with, or in, across the length and breadth of the US of A. -

After months of living life in a goldfish bowl, staying in the best hotels, perhaps, but still living out of suitcases, the pace began to tell. Britain, France, Germany, Scandinavia, then America, Australasia and the Far East—their schedules became more and more hectic, as they scaled heights only ever scaled by the likes of Elvis Presley in the years that had gone before.
So, many of the compositions featured in the film and album versions of ‘Help!’, ended up being written in the back seat of limousines, or on jet planes, and some critics had already started hinting that it showed.
Having said that, though, the ‘Help!’ album still contained some classic Beatle tracks: Ticket To Ride (on album three) and Yesterday, for many people the greatest Beatle composition by a mile. Covered by Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Andy Williams and so many more of the great song stylists, Yesterday is Paul McCartney at his most melodic. So intrinsically sad, so haunting, this song must surely be the most beautiful piece of Beatle music that one could ever wish to hear. Act Naturally, featuring Ringo in country mood, was another favourite, followed by Tell Me What You See, It’s Only Love, You Like Me Too Much and I’ve Just Seen A Face.
Just in time for Christmas 1965 came Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out, a double A-side and a perfect example of how Lennon & McCartney songs were beginning to become more personal statements, more individual, as John and Paul evolved their separate musical styles.
Released the very same as Day Tripper, was the ‘Rubber Soul’ album which, with hindsight, can be seen as a parting of the ways. The ‘Fab Four’ with their Pierre Cardin jackets, jelly babies and ‘chip butties’ were now a thing of the past. They’d won the hearts of teenagers, mums and dads, the media, show business and finally the Establishment—but that no longer seemed to count. Superstardom had long since removed them from the mundane, everyday things of ‘normal’ life, and they retreated more and more into their private worlds.
‘Rubber Soul’ showcased compositions full of social comment, satire and innuendo a comment on the roles society expected them to play, as the great ‘working-class heroes’ of the time. Norwegian Wood, Nowhere Man and Girl: all reveal traces of the ‘social rebel’ at the heart of John Lennon’s make-up. Paul’s endearing Michelle and the incredibly impressive Drive My Car are probably the most played compositions from the album, and rightly so. I'm Looking Through You, You Won’t See Me and In My Life offer further proof, if proof were needed, that the Beatles the public had grown accustomed to, were now leaving their zany, but lovable ‘Beatlemania’ image far behind.

By now, early 1966, the Beatles had amassed gold discs and No. 1s in quantities so vast, they had surpassed the sales figures of most of America’s hit parade veterans, some of whom had been featuring in the charts for more than twenty years! Musically, artistically, and in their lifestyles too, they began to pose giant question marks against many of the social tenets and conventions of the day. For everyone living through those frantic times—the media, the pundits and the Beatles public—it seemed that life would never be the same again. In May the Beatles made what was to be their last public appearance in England, at the New Musical Express Pollwinner’s Concert.
In June they followed this with a lightning tour of Germany; and then in August came their last tour of America—a ‘‘Goodbye” tour as it turned out, though millions of American teenagers didn’t realise it at the time. Paperback Writer coupled with Rain was released in June and the ‘A’ side, particularly, ensured they stayed the group in the public eye. Full of instrumental pyrotechnics, driving riffs, and sock-it-to-em, Paul McCartney lyrics, it was the first Beatles single not about love, and altogether marked a distinct change in style and musical direction. . . a hint of altogether different things to come. No-one but the Beatles could have followed that, so follow that they did, with ‘Revolver’, their finest album to date. Notable for the introduction of a wide range of instruments practically unknown in rock music, like French horn, sitar, clavichord, violin, viola etc., this album set anew standard for popular music all over the world. Just as ‘Rubber Soul’ marked the end of one era, ‘Revolver’ hailed the beginning of another, when they would achieve complete musical maturity as no other group had before or since. George Harrison came up with Taxman for the opening track, one of the best Beatle rockers of them all. Ringo, for so long considered the clown with rings on his fingers and a nice line in droll humour, sang Yellow Submarine which, in single form, surfaced merrily at No. 1! John’s mysterious I’m Only Sleeping was in sharp contrast with the gentle beauty of Paul’s Here, There And Everywhere (his personal favourite today), and bubbling optimism in Good Day Sunshine. Side two features more classic tracks from ‘Revolver’: John performing. And Your Bird Can Sing and Dr. Robert; Paul with For No One and then the out-and-out soul stomper Got To Get
You Into My Life. But it was Eleanor Rigby that became the most-played track of them all. A haunting, poignant song about a woman whose whole life and death caused hardly a ripple on the surface of the world around her, condemned to anonymity from cradle to grave. (A fascinating insight into the creation of this classic was related by Paul, years later, when he talked of going down to Bristol to see Jane Asher at The Old Vic, and killing time before the performance by ‘just taking a walk’. On passing a dusty, second-hand clothes shop, he saw the name in faded lettering above, ‘Rigby’. And that chance moment was enough to inspire a song that topped the charts in ten different countries, sold over two million copies, and then won a Grammy award.)
Completing this album is their early 1967 single Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields. Another gold disc winner, with a distinctive McCartney track on one side; and a totally original Lennon composition on the other, complete with almost hypnotic cellos, flutes, harpsichord, and electronic sound effects played at positively psychedelic speeds!
And so the curtain opens on yet another chapter in the Beatles story—the entrance of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, and their quest for enlightenment, through meditation, which would lead to inner peace.

Over the years, scores of Beatles’ albums have been produced, on various labels, throughout the Western world. But for the knowing fan, there’s one album that stands alone, the perfect portrait of the Beatles at their very peak.
Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ is that album, a tour-de-force of tune, lyrics, metaphor, allusion and imagery which pushed songwriting and recording through frontiers undreamt-of by any other artists, before or since. It took months in the making, achieved 4 Grammy awards, and sold 7 million copies world-wide at the last count! From the opening chords of the brass band in Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the listener can hear why. It is an extravaganza of sound that sweeps all before it—a masterpiece for all time. Then, into Ringo’s sentimental, but never mawkish With A Little Help From My Friends, before the most controversial track of all, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds. For this was the period when pundits tried to read anything and everything into a Beatle record, and for them, the initial letters were proof in themselves of the group’s mis-deeds. Fixing A Hole, though no makeweight, is obviously overshadowed by the flawless treatment that Paul gives to She’s Leaving Home, a poignant tale of a young girl’s romance against all the odds, beautifully crafted with typical McCartney style and flair. Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite is a perfect example of musical risk taking—that really pays off! Hundreds of feet of taped steam organ music were cut up and then assembled at random, at John’s request and the result is an absolute triumph. A Day In The Life, seen as the psychedelic anthem of the album, provides a fitting close to side one. Paul, at his teasing, whimsical best, opens side two with the delightful When I’m Sixty Four, and then moves on into Lovely Rita, a good - natured dig at nubile young womanhood dressing itself up in Traffic Warden’s. uniform and trying hard to disguise its more obvious charms!
Soon after the release of Sgt. Pepper’, the Beatles filmed their anthem of peace, All You Need Is Love, at EMI’s London studio as part of a worldwide transmission. Some 150 million people are estimated to have heard their message and, not surprisingly it made No. 1 within days. Baby You're A Rich Man, the B side, is almost a protest, by the Beatles, about certain contemporaries who adopted ‘beads, bells and kaftans’ simply because they thought it was the thing to do, and without any real convictions at all.
December 1967 their produenes of Magical Mystery Tour’ was screened, a BBC coup’ for Boxing Day. Magical Mystery. Tour, Your Mother Should Know, Fool On The Hill and! Am The Walrus all came from the double EP released at the same time. Once again, it was McCartney’s uncanny ear for melody (Fool On The Hill) set against Lennon's weird ‘n’ wondrous imagination (I Am The Walrus)that kept the group so firmly in the public gaze. But it was 1967 that saw the death of Brian Epstein, so long their mentor, manager and friend. As a direct result, they formed Apple Corps. Ltd., a multi-million pound entertainment group that would embrace all their manifold interests—records, films, merchandising, publishing and more. As Donovan said to John Lennon at the time: “Pop music is only the beginning. Because’ pop music is changing the scene anyway. Fashion will change. Architecture, everything. ...
And it was with this vision of the future, this dream of a world given over to peace and love, that they made their plans for the years that lay ahead.

Inevitably, changes had to come. During these studio’ years, when their music reached its zenith, their talents began to flourish along increasingly separate paths. It was obvious that they no longer wanted to project themselves as four facets of one identity, i.e. The Beatles. Each was a multi-talented musician with musical leanings of his own but, more important, each was an individual who wanted to do his own thing. For George, especially, this meant studying under the Maharishi, in a search for spiritual peace.
After two trips to India of his own accord, he persuaded John, Paul and Ringo to join with him, and visit the Maharishi’s Academy in Rishikesh for an extended stay. Accompanied by Mia Farrow, Donovan, one or two Beach Boys, and assorted friends, they made their pilgrimage in early 1968. Ringo, though curious and sympathetic, was never convinced in quite the same way, and described the scene as:
“‘Just like Butlin’s”.
Meanwhile, back in London, an Apple boutique had opened in Baker Street, and a worldwide headquarters for Apple Corps. was set up in sedate Savile Row.
Hello Goodbye, was first released as a single coupled with I Am The Walrus, in November 1967. Though a trifle obscure for the mums and dads market, it nevertheless made the No.1 spot and held it for seven weeks. Lady Madonna came out in March 1968, a terrific boogie number performed by Paul with great gusto, it got some fans wondering if they were planning to forsake medi‘tation, and take up with Catholicism instead. Beatleologists pored over the label for hours, for the smallest clue! Hey Jude coupled with Revolution followed in August, their very first release on their fledgling Apple label, and it got the Beatles onto the David Frost TV show (in their last appearance as a group) to help it on its way. A rock anthem, in every sense of the word, it inspired many other groups all over the world to try the same but never with such success.
In November came ‘The Beatles White Album’, which surpassed even ‘Sgt. Pepper’ for sales, notching up some 4 million in mere weeks. Though this was truly a collection of outstanding tracks, each track could be seen as the fruition of asolo talent, rather than a Beatles production in the previous sense. Back In The USSR is an out and out rocker, and one of their best. Then Paul demonstrates his versatility once again, and launches into Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, a tongue in cheek excursion into reggae, with mock Jamaican accent to boot! George, with the help of Eric Clapton, gives us the majestic, ever moving, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, a perfect close of mood for side one.
Side two opens with John, flailing out at every injustice that caused him concern at the time: Bungalow Bill, big game hunters, and then America’s obsession with gun ownership, Happiness Is A Warm Gun. In complete contrast, Paul’s affection for Martha, his lolloping Old English Sheepdog, inspired the catchy and joyful Martha My Dear. Ringo contributes Don’t Pass Me By in his own inimitable vein, whilst George performs Piggies, with guitar in full song. Julia takes us back to Liverpool and early days, but it is John’s rendition of I’m So Tired, baring his soul to the world, that leaves the most moving mark of all. To complete side two, we move onto a track from the film ‘Yellow Submarine’, that opened in the West End in July 1968. All Together Now, was one of four new tracks specially composed for this full-length cartoon which was a huge box-office success—even though the Beatles’ contribution (on the filmic side) was very brief.
And so, we move on to album eight, and the final chapter begins. ...

From this time on (early 1969) the four Beatles followed their own paths almost totally, only coming together in the studio to meet a production deadline on the next Beatles release. And even then, an album or single from the Beatles often had to compete in the market place with a solo venture from, say, John or George. Frequently on the same Apple label!
Their individual talents and ambitions constantly threatened the confines and workings of the original group, and rumours of a ‘break-up started flying round so frequently, that even their most devoted fans began to fear the dream was coming to an end.
In January they filmed the actual recording of Get Back on the roof of the Apple headquarters in Savile Row. The lunchtime shoppers and neighbouring office workers couldn't believe their ears, or eyes! A great rock ‘n’ roll number in the best tradition with driving guitars amplified all over Mayfair, and an electronic keyboard adding plenty of decibels to the show. Don’t Let Me Down featured John in full flight. In March, Paul married Linda Eastman, a photographer who'd worked on several Beatle assignments for New York magazines; and then, only a few days later, John married his long-time companion Yoko Ono, on the Rock of Gibraltar
The Ballad Of John And Yoko came out in May, featuring John and Paul, though it was more of an artistic protest song, than a typical Beatle song in the established sense.
In July and August the group worked on the “Abbey Road’ album which was released in September 1969. But side one continues now with tracks taken from ‘Let It Be’ which was originally recorded in February 1969, but not released until some 15 months had gone by, due to a tangled web of contractual problems, and musical disagreements within the group about the ‘sound’ they were trying to create. Across The Universe, For You Blue and Two Of Us, might well have been chart successes for an unknown group, but compared with the title track Let It Be and the beautifully soulful The Long And Winding Road they have tended to be over looked. As examples of where the Beatles were going at the time, they certainly deserve inclusion in a definitive compilation such as this. Side Two is made up entirely of tracks from ‘Abbey Road’, mentioned above. Though never regarded in quite the same way as ‘Sgt. Pepper’, track for track it matches ‘Pepper’ in every way. Come Together features John urging freedom and love upon us all, followed by George’s composition Something, not just a beautiful melody, but a song that was very commercial, and thus covered by many top artists, here at home and in the USA. Then Paul gives out with Maxwell’s Silver Hammer, a cheery number that paves a natural path for Ringo to come in with Octopus’s Garden, virtually a Mk. II version of his 1968 offering, Yellow Submarine! Again, George gets an opportunity to promote his fast developing talent as composer/singer, with the catchy, and immaculately performed Here Comes The Sun. Because highlights John, Paul and George in close harmony (shades of 1962!) and then Paul, as only Paul can, turns on all the charm for Golden Slumbers, a melody that’s as beautifully crafted as it is performed. All four share the lead for Carry That Weight before passing over to Paul to bring everything to a fitting conclusion with The End. In December 1970, after months of rumours and speculation, the Beatles formally disbanded to pursue their differing solo careers. And so the group came to an end.
But their music, which did so much to shape the personality of a whole generation all over the world, lives on. Just as fresh and original today as it was in the Sixties, when they rose to fame and fortune. And that is the stuff from which legends are made.
