The Scorpions Chronicle In 1971, Rudolf and Michael Schenker, Klaus Meine, Lothar Heimberg and Wolfgang Dziony are an amateur band in Hanover, Germany. The same
year they become professionals, sign their first recording contract and record their debut album "Lonesome Crow" with producer Conny Plank, which is released in 1972. It sells remarkably well, the band plays over 130 gigs and gains numerous new fans. Still in 1972 they write the soundtrack for an anti-drug movie called "The Cold Paradise". By 1973, "Lonesome Crow" is released worldwide, the band tours as support act for Chicken Shack and UFO in Germany. UFO is so excited about Scorpions' guitarist, Michael Schenker, that they sign him. His brother, Rudolf, breaks up the band but forms a new line-up soon after wards. Two months later the Scorpions appear on German Television; besides Rudolf Schenker (guitar) and Klaus Meine (vocals) the band now consists of Ulrich Roth (guitar), Francis Buchholz (bass) and Jurgen Rosenthal (drums). During Christmas they play festivals in Hamburg, Hanover and Dussel - dorf where they are enor mously successful. Signs are set for an international career. In 1974 the band signs with RCA and records the album "Fly To The Rainbow" at Musicland Studios in Munich. Tours with Edgar Broughton and Dr. Hook follow and the German music magazine "Popfoto" gives them an award as "Most Promising New Band". Towards the end of 1974 Jurgen Rosenthal is replaced by Belgian drummer Rudy Lenners. In 1975 they tour outside Germany for the first time. After concerts in France and Belgium they support the group Sweet on their Scandinavian and German tour. The gigs with Sweet are large, sold-out venues which make the Scorpions even more popular. At a summer festival in Dusseldorf, they turn out to be the "uncrowned kings", Ginger Baker's Airforce, Hardin & York and Savoy Brown have to take second place. Producer Dieter Dierksfrom Cologne takes the band under contract and the album "In Trance" is produced at Dierks' studio. In November, 1975 the Scorpions embark on their first club tour throughout England, a final concert at London's "Marquee" highlights this very success- ful tour. During 1976 they tour on their own in Germany, France, The Netherlands and Switzer- land. "In Trance" becomes one of the best selling heavy rock albums in Japan. In April the band starts its second tour of England, followed by concerts in Germany together with the American rockers Kiss and an open air festival in Offenburg, where 20.000 people celebrate the Scorpions besides Bob Marley and Wishbone Ash. The album "Virgin Killer" receives a lot of attention immediately after re lease - not only because of its very provocative cover. It becomes a best seller in Germany but also in Japan where 20.000 copies are sold within a few days. In 1977 the Scorpions do another series of concerts in England. Rudy Lenners leaves the band due to health problems and is replaced by
drummer Herman Rarebell. "Taken By Force", their fifth album, is released in December. In 1978 they head off for their first tour in Japan. All five concerts are sold out weeks in advance. Japan treats the band like real "superstars" and they appear on the most popular Japanese television show. Two of their concerts in Tokyo are recorded for the live album,Tokyo Tapes". This 2-LP-set is listed on all major hitparades worldwide. Ulrich Roth leaves the band to form his own group. 140 guitarists are invited for audition in England - Matthias Jabs from Hanover finally gets the job. Festivals in Ulm and Saarbrucken, attended by more than 90.000 people, turn out to be the high- lights of the band's appearances during this year. Still in 1978 they sign a new recording contract and go back into the studio. In January, 1979 "Lovedrive" is released and they start a 22-day-tour throughout Germany. Michael Schenker leaves UFO and rejoins the band on a short-term basis. As Michael suffers from bad health after a few gigs, Matthias Jabs returns. Two very successful tours with 14 concerts in France and 11 soldout gigs in England follow. The English music press celebrates the "German Heavy Metal Band" which sells out even large venues despite numerous domestic supergroups and a strong "New Wave" development. The English tour is followed by five sold-out concerts in Japan, attended by over 50.000 fans and a promotion tour to the Philippines for four major television shows. Some weeks later the band tours America with Ted Nugent playing in front of an average of 18.000 people per concert.
Gig number one is in the open air in Cleveland, where they turn an audience of 68.000 into Scorpions fans. The album "Lovedrive" climbs the charts worldwide and reaches for the first time Top 50 in the United States. Further appearances include the English Reading Festival and the open air festival in Nurnberg together with the Who, CheapTrick and AC/DC in front of 65.000 people. Until the middle of December they do their second U.S.-tour with Sammy Hagar and Rainbow and between January and March, 1980 they work on their latest hit album, "Animal Magnetism". In April they do their largest German tour so far, appearing in halls with more than 3.000 seats, followed by concerts in England and a ten-week tour in America. This isn't the end of the story - watch out for news about the band that killed "Krautrock". vor. Zwei Monate spater treten sie im Deutschen Fernsehen auf. Neben Rudolf Schenker (Gitarre) und Klaus Meine (Gesang) besteht die Band nun aus Ulrich Roth (Gitarre), Francis Buchholz (Ba) und Jurgen Rosenthal (Schlagzeug). Wahrend der
Weihnachtsfeiertage spielen sie mit sensationel- lem Erfolg auf Festivals in Hamburg, Hannover und Dusseldorf. Die Zeichen fur eine internationale Karriere sind gesetzt. 1974 bindet die Band sich an RCA und nimmt im Munchener Musicland Studio die LP ,Fly To The Rainbow" auf. Es folgen Tourneen mit Edgar Broughton und Dr. Hook,
die deutsche Musikzeitschrift ,Pop foto" zeichnet die Scorpions als ,Vielversprechendste neue Band" aus. Ende 1974 wird Jurgen Rosenthal durch den
belgischen Schlagzeuger Rudy Lenners ersetzt. 1975 geht die Gruppe erstmals au?erhalb Deutsch - lands auf Tournee. Sie spielt in Frankreich, Belgien und im Vorprogramm der Sweet in Skandinavien und Deutschland. Die Konzerte mit Sweet finden in groen, ausverkauften Hallen statt und sind fur die Scorpions das Sprungbrett zu noch groerer Popularitat. Auf einem Sommer- festival in Dusseldorf entpuppen sie sich als die, ungekronten Konige"; sie spielen Ginger Baker's Airforce, Hardin & York und Savoy Brown an die Wand. Der Kolner Produzent Dieter Dierks nimmt die Band unter Vertrag und produziert in seinem Studio das Album ,In Trance". Im November 1975 folgt die erste Gastspielreise durch englische Clubs. Das letzte Konzert im Londoner ,Marquee" ist gleichzeitig Hohepunkt der Tour. Im Laufe des Jahres 1976 ist die Gruppe in Deutschland, Frankreich, Holland und der Schweiz auf Tournee. ,In Trance" mausert sich zu einer der best ver kauften Heavy-Rock-LPs in Japan. Im April spielt die Gruppe zum zweitenmal in England, gefolgt von einer Reihe von Konzerten in Deutschland mit der amerikanischen Rockband Kiss und einem Open Air Festival in Offenburg, wo 20.000 Zuschauer die Scorpions genauso feiern wie Bob Marley und
Wishbone Ash. Das Album ,Virgin Killer" erregt sofort nach Veroffentlichung groe Aufmerksamkeit - nicht nur wegen der provozierenden Hulle. Die LP wird zum Bestseller, in Deutschland aber auch in Japan, wo innerhalb weniger Tage 20.000
Exemplare uber die Ladentische gehen. 1977 geben die Scorpions eine weitere Serie von Konzerten in England. Rudy Lenners verla?t die Band aus gesundheitlichen Grunden und wird durch den Schlagzeuger Herman Rarebell ersetzt. Das funfte
Album, ,Taken By Force", wird im Dezember ver offentlicht. 1978 fliegen sie erstmals nach Japan; die funf Konzerte sind Wochen im voraus ausver- kauft. Die Japaner empfangen die Scorpions wie ,,Superstars" und sie treten in Japans popularster
Fernsehshow auf. Zwei Konzerte in Tokio werden fur das Livealbum ,,Tokyo Tapes" mitgeschnitten. Dieses Doppelalbum erscheint in allen wichtigen
Hitparaden der Welt. Ulrich Roth verlat die Gruppe, um seine eigene Band aufzubauen.
140 Gitarristen werden in England ,abgehort" - Matthias Jabs aus Hannover wird von den Scorpions schlielich akzeptiert. Hohepunkt der Bandauftritte des Jahres 1978 sind die Festivals in Ulm und Saarbrucken vor uber 90.000 Zuschauern. Noch im gleichen Jahr unterschreibt die Gruppe einen neuen Schallplatten vertrag und ist wieder im Studio. Im Januar 1979 erscheint , Love- drive", und man startet eine 22-Stadte-Tournee
durch die Bundesrepublik. Michael Schenker verlat UFO und tritt fur kurze Zeit mit den Scorpions auf. Schon nach den ersten Gigs wird Michael krank, Matthias Jabs springt ein und kehrt als festes Mitglied zur Band zuruck. Zwei sehr er- folgreiche Tourneen mit 14 Konzerten in Frankreich und 11 ausverkauften Gigs in England schlieen sich an. Die englische Musikpresse feiert eine deutsche ,,Heavy Metal Band", die trotz zahlloser britischer Supergruppen und des gerade explodierenden ,,New Wave" gro?e Hallen auf der Insel fullt. Der England tournee folgen funf ausver-kaufte Konzerte in Japan vor uber 50.000 kreischenden Fans und eine Promotiontour mit vier groen Fernseh shows auf den Philippinen. Wenige Wochen spater ist die Band in Amerika mit Ted Nugent unterwegs und spielt im Schnitt vor 18.000 Menschen pro Abend. Das erste Konzert findet unter freiem Himmel in Cleveland statt, wo sie 68.000 Zuhorer in Scorpions-Fans verwandeln. Die LP ,,Lovedrive" ersturmt auf der ganzen Welt die Hitparaden und erreicht in den Vereinigten Staaten erstmals die Top 50. Weitere Auftritte er- folgen wahrend des englischen Reading Festivals und zusammen mit den Who, Cheap Trick und AC/DC auf dem Nurnberger Open Air Festival vor 65.000 Menschen. Bis Mitte Dezember sind sie mit Sammy Hagar und Rainbow zum zweitenmalin Amerika auf Tournee und von Januar bis Marz 1980 arbeiten sie an ihrem neuesten Hitalbum Animal Magnetism". Im April schliet sich die furdie Gruppe bisher grote Deutsch land tournee in Hallen mit uber 3.000 Platzen an, gefolgt vonKonzerten in England und einer zehnwochigen Tournee durch Amerika. Hier ist die Story der Band, die den ,,Krautrock" schlachtete, noch lange nicht zu Ende.
