Deep Purple’s visits to Australia ‘during their thirty five year career haven't always been frequent, but they have been memorable, Itwas back in 1971 with the original Mk 2 line-up that the group first made the trip, playing four festival dates which climaxed in the Randwick Stad gig, Supported by Free - shows which passed into Australian rock history. It took another festival, this time the legendary January 1975 Sunbury bash lure them back, this time with singer
David Coverdale and bassist Glenn Hughes, Verbals between m of the Purp’s and local upstarts AC/DC made the headlines, though Angus Young and his crew went on to ejoy a modicum of success not long after. Deep Purple surprised everyone by playing futher Oz d...wards the end of that same year, though by this time they had their own upstart in tow; new guitarist Tommy Bolin ...one of the larriost PA sistems aver toured by a rock band.  When the group reformed in 1984, Australia was chosen for the worldebut of the Perfectd Strangers tour, sparked by
their first new studio album in over eight years. This tima biker riots outside some of the gigs and complaints about the  volume from local residents made the headlines, but nothing stopped the group hugely successful Austrlian shows getting written up right round the world. After that the residents of the Perth suburbs could slee i ours failed to make it to Australia - and fans in the country missed out on the turmoil caused first by lan Gillan temporary absence and then the banjo player's departure. By 1995 Deep Purple had shaken themselves recruited former Dixie Dregs guitarist Steve Morse to their ranks, and underwent a caane revival - which shows no ) signs of letting up. Fist came the excellent 1996 album Purpendiculay, wich saw th band pushing inal rections, and wih an energy and enthusiasm ‘that promised much for the new line-up,
Australian fans could at least get some idea of the resultant tour thanks to Live At Olympia, recorded that same year. After the tour the band took a breather, with both Jon Lord and lan Gillan finishing long promised solo projects (Pictured Within and Dreamcatcher respectively) before regrouping in.late 1997 to start recording the new studio album Abandon, feleased the following year. Deliberately going for a powerful more unified and much heavier sound, the disc produced a batch of songs which were tailor made for the stage, as the subsequent world tour proved. Beyond any shadow of a doubt, the “Abandon” gigs produced some stunning performances of the new material, along with superb reworkings of earlier classics as well. All that was lacking was an official live album to prove it - and where better to record it but
Australia, as the band neared the end of the tour.

Mixed and mastered within days of the a: and totally overdub free, we might've called it “Made In Australia”, but when acouple of the reviews spoke of the band playing with total abandon -. how could we resist?!
