SIDE A

01. Hear My Train A Comin' (Acoustic) - 03:06
HEAR MY TRAIN A COMIN' - Surely Hendrix's record collection contained a well-played copy of The Best of Muddy Waters. Filmed and recorded in December 1967, shortly after the UK release of Axis: Bold As Love, the inspiration for "Hear My Train A Comin"" can be traced to Muddy's "Still A Fool" (the reworking of the traditional "Two Trains Running") and "Standing Around Crying." Enjoying the novelty of playing a 12 string guitar, Hendrix explores the drone effects the instrument provides - just as Leadbelly, the acknowledged "King of the 12-String Guitar" had first popularized.

Recorded: Bruce Fleming Photography Studio, London, December 19, 1967
published by Experience Hendrix L.L.C. (ASCAP)
12 String Guitar, Vocals: Jimi Hendrix

02. Born Under A Bad Sign (Booker T. Jones, William Bell) - 07:36
BORN UNDER A BAD SIGN - It is interesting that one southpaw guitarist would uncover
another, Hendrix's instrumental treatment of the Albert King classic contains several of King's signature riits which Hendrix had learned directly from the originator.
During his tenure with Little Richard, Hendrix befriended King during a stop in East St, Louls. King showed him some of his fingerings and the way he bent strings horizontally rather than vertically. "Albert King plays completely and strictly in one way," pointed out Hendrix, "Straight funk blues, new blues guitar, very young and funky sounding which is great. He is one of the funkiest (guitarists) I've heard.

Recorded: Record Plant, New York, December 15, 1969
Producer: Jimi Hendrix. Engineer: Bob Cotto, Ron Beekman.
published by Irving Music, Inc.  Guilar, Vocals: Jimi Hendrix.
Bass: Billy Cox.  Drums: Buddy Miles

03. Red House - 03:43
RED HOUSE - Noel Redding told Guitar Player that "Red House was Jimi's way of using his musical roots. The blues are made for guitar, and 'Red House' is no exception." Interestingly, there is no bass present on the original version of "Red House", as Redding plays a tuned down, hollow body electric guitar. Originally recorded in December 1966 and included on the UK Are You Experienced album, "Red House" wasn't issued in America until 1969, when it was included on the Smash Hits collection. Much to Hendrix's displea- sure, executives at Reprise Records, his initial US label, left the song off the American edition, concerned that Americans no longer dug the blues and kept it in on the shelf. Several influences can be heard on "Red House," including Guitar Slim, Little Milton, Freddy King, B.B. King and Otis Rush. The song was part of nearly every concert Hendrix ever performed and has since become a blues standard.

Recorded: CBS Studios, London, December 13, 1966.

Producer: Chas Chandler.  Engineer: Mike Ross.
Guitar, Vocals: Jimi Hendrix.
Bass (Rhythm Guitar): Noel Redding.

SIDE B

04. Catfish Blues ( Robert Petway - Arr. Jimi Hendrix) - 07:46
CATFISH BLUES - Recorded live in a Holland television station, Hendrix again pays tribute to his original influence - Muddy Waters, Hendrix and the Experience - listen to Mitch Mitchell' shit-everything-within-reach drumming - stay in Muddy's groove until the last 12 bars when they double the beat and shilt the song into overdrive.

Recorded: Vitus Studios, Bussem, Holland,  November 10, 1967.
published by Music Corporation of America, Inc., BMI
Guitar, Vocals: Jimi Hendrix.
Bass: Noel Redding.  Drums: Mitch Mitchell

05. Voodoo Chile Blues - 08:46
VOODOO CHILE BLUES- An alternate composite take of the legendary Electric Ladyland master, Voodoo Chile is one of Hendrix's most introspective and intense blues. In many ways the song has the same haunting feel of Robert Johnson's "Crossroad's Blues," as both artists' souls and destinies seemed to be controlled by another power. Outside of the standard 12- bar blues progression, a John Lee Hooker inf luence can be heard.

Recorded: Record Plant, New York, May 2, 1968.
published by Experience Hendrix L.L.C. (ASCAP)
Producer: Jimi Hendrix.  Engineer: Eddia Kramer.
Guitar, Vocals: Jimi Hendrix.  Bass: Jack Casady.
Drums: Mitch Mitchell.  Organ: Steve Winwood

06. Mannish Boy (Ellas McDaniel, McKinley Morganfield, Mel London) - 05:20
MANNISH BOY - Hendrix reinterprets Muddy's tour-de-force by using the sped-up wall-of- sound treatment. A declaration of male sexuality, the lyrics in "Mannish Boy" were suited to Hendrix's early flamboyant demeanor. One can't help but note a trace of shyness in Hendrix's vocals throughout-though not in his playing.

Recorded: Record Plant, New York, April 22, 1969.
Producer: Jimi Hendrix.  Engineer: Gary Kellgren

Guitar, Vocals: Jimi Hendrix.
Bass: Billy Cox. Drums: Buddy Miles

SIDE C

07. Once I Had A Woman - 07:48
ONCE I HAD A WOMAN - With its opening notes directly lifted from "The Things That
To Do," instrumentally and lyrically "Once Had A Woman" reveal the influence of
inator of the sonic guitar, Guitar Slim. I Used the orig-Guitar Slim was a favorite of Hendrix and perhaps a comparison of the two artists is in order.
"Slim was an overtone fanatic," said Early King, a contemporary of Guitar Slim. "He used a P.A. set, never an amplifier, He had these iron cone speakers and the sound would run through them speakers and the vibration would create that sound, because Slim always played at peak volume, Slim was getting a fuzz tone distortion way before anyone else. You didn't hear it again until Jimi Hendrix came along.

Recorded: Record Plant, New York, January 23, 1970.
Producer: Jimi Hendrix. Engineer: Bob Hughes, Dave Ragno.
published by Experience Hendrix L.L.C. (ASCAP)
Guitar, Vocals: Jimi Hendrix . Bass: Billy Cox.
Drums: Buddy Miles.  Harmonica: Unknown

08. Bleeding Heart (Elmore James - Arr. Jimi Hendrix) - 03:27
BLEEDING HEART - A photograph taken of Hendrix soon after his arrival in England shows him witha Best of Elmore James LP, so you know who he was listening to. Hendrix covers one of James' lesser known classics. He doesn't use James' signature bottieneck but he achieves a lot of the same sustain effects by over-driving his amplifier, Billy Cox's bass is especially effective on this compact performance.

Recorded: Record Plant,  New York, May 21, 1969.
Producer: Jimi Hendrix. Engineer: Dave Ragno
published by Arc Music Corp. BMI
Guitar, Vocals: Jimi Hendrix.
Bass: Billy Cox. Drums: Buddy Miles

09. Jelly 292 - 06:21
JAM 282 - You could say that on "Jam 292" Hendrix does the King's thing - Freddy and Albert that is. Early in the performance, Hendrix sets the instrumental's pace on the bass strings of the guitar ala Freddy King's "San Ho Zay" and "The Stumble." As the song progresses, he squeezes out a piercing solo in the tradition of Albert King before retreating back to the bass strings.

Recorded: Record Plant.  Now York, May 14, 1969.
Producer: Jimi Hendrix.  Engineer: Bob Hughes.
published by Experience Hendrix L.L.C. (ASCAP)
Guitar, Vocals: Jimi Hendrix.
Bass: Billy Cox . Drums: Mitch Mitchell. Piano: Sharon Layne

SIDE D

10. Electric Church Red House - 06:11
ELECTRIC CHURCH RED HOUSE - 'Red House' was a low-down dirty blues," said Billy Cox. "Red House' was part of our show during our last tours. We'd play it for a long time, sometimes 10 to 15 minutes. Most of the time we jammed as long as it was feeling good." Although this is a studio version of "Red House" it has a definite live feel as Hendrix turned the song into a primer for blues guitar. You can especially hear the influence of B.B. King during the performance.

Recorded: TTG Studios, Hollywood, Ca. October 29, 1968.
Producer: Jimi Hendrix.  Engineer: Angel Balestier.
published by Experience Hendrix L.L.C. (ASCAP)
Guitar, Vocals: Jimi Hendrix.
Bass: Noel Redding. Drums: Mitch Mitchell. Organ: Lee Michaels

11. Hear My Train A Comin' (Electric) - 12:05
HEAR MY TRAIN A COMIN' - Appropriately, "Hear My Train A Comin'" opens and closes Jimi Hendrix: Blues. This extended rendition, hailed by many as one of the guitarist's finest live performances, effectively showcases the remarkable creative growth Hendrix had undergone since picking up that twelve-string acoustic guitar in December 1967. Perhaps less intimate andintrospective than the earlier acoustic version, Hendrix elfectively embellishes this blues with his electric approach, unifying his unparalleled technical skill with an unrivaled passion.
