Michael Jackson is a phenomenon, but he's no overnight sensation. From his million selling Motown debut as the lead vocalist with the Jackson 5 ("I Want You Back," 1969), to his current status as America's number one recording artist and first video superstar, the 25 year-oid native of Gary, Indiana has been growing up in public for the past 15 years. Longer than that, actuaily. Michael began singing professionally with his older brothers Jermaine, Marlon, Jackie and Tito at age five. The group recorded at least three singles for local labels prior to their signing with Motown, where they promptly fired off four consecutive double number onesnumber one pop and number one
R & Bdiscs: "I Want You Back," "ABC," "The Love You Save" and "Ill Be There." In 1971,
Michael started making solo records. Ranging from airy ballads ("Got To Be There") to bouncy remakes of old rock 'n'roll numbers (Bobby Day's "Rockin' Robin"), these were also hits. Until they left the label at the end of 1975, every Jackson 5 single recorded for Motown went top ten R&B, and two of these (1971's "Never Can Say Goodbye" and 1974's "Dancing Machine") were R&B number ones. Since then, the grouprechristened the Jacksons with brother Randy filling in for Jermaine, who soldiered on as a Motown solo artist-has racked up another half-dozen hits. Michael, meanwhile, has sold more than 30 million records as a solo artist. A glorious history, to be sure, of which the album you now hold in your hands is but the latest chapter. It seems that when
Motown moved its offices several years back, more than one carton of unreleased session tapes had been misplaced, including-get this-more than 40 tracks by Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5! Legend has it these tapes had mysteriously found their way into the Moroccan Muzik Makers file, but I don't believe that. Turns out the paperwork had been in the system since late 1972 and early 1973, which is when this material was originally recorded, but the master tapes had apparently been eaten by a
close relative of the monster that devours socks out of my laundry one at a time.
The real surprise, however, came not when Motown found these tapes, but when they played them. At least an album's worth were of a surprisingly high-quality. Sure, they
needed final mixes and a little overdubbing, but Michael's vocals were there. What's more important is that these tracks give pop historians and Michael-come-lately fans alike a rare opportunity to hear a now legendary performer in the process of getting his style together. The sunny title track provides the missing link between the Tymes '61 summer smash "So Much In Love" and more mature Michael material such as "Human Nature," while the guitar driven "Don't Let It Get You Down" bears an uncanny
resemblance to the young man's future experiments in rock! funk fusion.
Meanwhile, the albums pair of covers-Smokey Robinson & The Miracle's "You've Really Got A Hold On Me" and Al Green's "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)"- spotlight two of young Michael's major stylistic influences. Note how closely he fol
lows the singers' original verses, mannerism for mannerism, Inflection for inflection many of which he still retains. Although "Melodle" finds Michael working out on a neoclassic Motown stomper and "Call On Me" is reminiscent of an early Intruders track, one reason for the young man's current success lies in his ability to turn pop confection into pure perfection. The frothy "Touch The One You Love," the melodramatic "To Make My Father Proud" and the effervescent "Girl You're So Together" are all sound evidence of Motown's and Michael's constant attempts to broaden their artistic range. Obviously, the strategy worked. Like Michael Jackson himself, this album will grow on you. Never Before Released…
