Like thousands of others, I have been waiting over twelve 
months now for the release of The Shadows' first LP. 
Following a hit record, and particularly a hit record of such 
international fame as The Shadows' Apache, there is always 
a tremendous demand for an LP. 

Knowing The Shadows so well personally, I know also their 
complete dedication towards perfection on records. A 
Shadows recording session can be a completely exhausting 
affair for their Recording Manager, Norrie Paramor. I know 
I have given Norrie a few grey hairs in my time, but The 
Shadows have almost turned his hair white overnight. The 
remarkable thing is that Norrie comes up for more—still 
smiling. 

The Shadows' recording sessions are something like a 
civil war. I have seen the boys rehearse instrumentals for 
days and, after much heated discussion, they finally agree 
on an arrangement and presentation for a number: then, 
suddenly, in the middle of a recording session, Tony, Bruce, 
Jet or Hank will decide it is not going right and they will pull 
the whole thing to pieces again to the sounds of violent 
argument. This is the reason why The Shadows' first LP 
has taken so long to be released, but this is also the reason 
why The Shadows' LP is, to my mind, the most outstanding 
instrumental one I have ever heard. There are so many 

sounds on this record and all of them somehow recognis-able 
as The Shadows' sound, yet so varied that to me each track is 
a new delight. The ShackoWs' followers will know that they are 
also a great singing group and, of course, I have always known 
this. As often as possible they have backed me vocally, as well 
as instrurmiltally, on records, but I am sure their singing will 
be a surprise to many people, as will Hank's piano playing. He 
emerges in a new light with his playing in Stand Up And Say That; 
Hank has always played around on the piano and I am glad to see 
him taking it seriously. What is there to say about Jet and Tony ? 
They hold their own in any company in the world, not only in Beat 
Music but also in Jazz—in my opinion. I think the most pleasing 
tracks are the instrumental harmony pieces from Bruce and Hank. 
These are going to surprise many of our musician friends who in 
the past have often been critical of new, so-called untrained groups. 
I have seen Bruce and Hank rehearsing these instrumentals 
hour after hour in dressing rooms all over the world, and I 
hope the boys think it has all been worthwhile; I know that I do.
