1 don’t know what the word “hip” means to you. Chances are, it has as many different shades of meaning as there are people who use it. But one thing we do know, the word itself is complimentary and implies that the person being spoken of is “in the know”, well-informed, and capable in the field of interest under discussion.
The word “versatile” implies great flexibility and wide range of ability and understanding in a given area of endeavor as “hip versatility.” Boots Randolph is the only sax man I know of who can blow a so-right, so-in-character chorus on a country record session; turn right around and play oh-so-sexy-saxy on a beautiful ballad; and next, knock everybody clean out at a jazz festival.  Obviously, this places Boots on a very high level of “hip-osity”, “hiptitude” or “super hip-pidity”, if we may coin a few words. This is why he works on an average of 12 record sessions per week as a side-man for various artists, from Elvis to Boot Hog Pefferley. Trouble is, you don’t hear enough of Boots on such records. Naturally, the stars must shine. Well, on this, and his other Monument records, Boots is the star, and I must say, a shining, swinging one.
If you dig great sax and hip sounds, latch onto this pancake and file it in that special section of your hi-fi cabinet reserved for “The Greatest”.
