This is Tom Jones’s second LP since he started on his extremely successful singing career. His first LP ‘‘ALONG CAME JONES’’ earned him rave notices both here and in the United States. The interim period between these two LPs has been for Tom Jones both hectic and highly satisfying. The success of his single “IT’S NOT UNUSUAL” created a great demand for his unique singing talent. He achieved international success as an artist when he crossed the Atlantic to appear on all the major American T.V. network shows. He also toured the Country for over three months appearing on one-night stands. During this exciting but exhausting tour he met the king of rock-and-roll, Elvis Presley, in Los Angeles.
Whilst on this tour his next record “‘WHAT’S NEW PUSSYCAT?” was released and quickly climbed and occupied a high position in the charts. “lis first LP ‘ALONG CAME JONES”’ re-titled for the U.S. market ‘IT’S NOT UNUSUAL”’ had been such a tremendous success that another LP was rush-released entitled “‘WHAT’S NEW PUSSYCAT?”’ (not released in Britain). This also was snapped up quickly by the avid fans.
Apart from the success of his records Tom is first to admit that the experience he gained during his three months touring in America was invaluable. Being unable to take his backing group The Squires with him was a bad blow for Tom. They have been with him from the start of his career and during this time a sympathetic rapport between singer and musicians has developed. This intuitive understanding of each other's abilities has led to a successful partnership enabling Tom to devote all his attention to the delivery and performance of the songs. Being bereft of The Squires Tom had to rely on various backing groups as he went from one venue to another. These engagements were often hundreds of miles apart and most of Tom’s waking hours were devoured by the extensive travelling, leaving hardly any time for rehearsals with the latest backing group before the curtain went up.
It is an indication of the talent that Tom possesses that the many hours of travelling, snatched meals and inadequate rehearsal time had no effect on the quality of his performance on stage. His performances on records, television shows and personal appearances impressed everyone during his stay, resulting in an offer for him to co-star in a major New York Charity show with those two all-time ‘‘greats’’ of show business Sammy Davis Junior and Louis Armstrong.
With offers of work pouring in for Tom Jones to continue working in the United States and other countries, the problem arose of trying to arrange sufficient time to discuss the formula of another LP. Tom wasn’t scheduled back in Britain until late Autumn as after completing the American tour, he was flying on to Bermuda for a working holiday. Hence the LP was planned in Bermuda. Although I must admit this sun-drenched location is a perfect setting for planning anything, one encountered certain difficulties with Tom Jones, as his out-door activities included swimming, water-skiing and snorkeling, the latter having all the advantages of viewing the under-water world without suffering the encumbrance of oxygen tanks ete. Eventually even the most enthusiastic snorkeler has to return to shore and gradually the LP was set up.
On his return to Britain in November he entered the recording studio for two weeks’ strenuous work starting at 10a.m. until late at night. Nevertheless the result is a very interesting LP. The choice of material this time is mostly original songs plus some specially written for him by his manager Gordon Mills and arranger Les Reed.
Some artists are wary about recording albums of unknown material as the melodies are unfamiliar with the fans and do not give instant ear appeal. However with Tom’s unique vocalising he has the ability of magnifying the melody, seemingly giving the song a familiar quality. This is particularly spotlighted in Tom’s rendition of ‘‘THE LOSER’’. Basically the tune of this song is secondary to the lyrical idea but his vocal performance enhances the weakness to such a degree that he makes the song sound like a standard.
On this album Tom Jones has done some great vocal performances, justifying all the good things that have been said and written about him and proving to us that he is an artist of exceptional talent with long lasting qualities. But that I leave to you, the record buyer — 1 am sure you will not be disappointed.
