Before the gelatinous transition between the sixth and seventh decades of this century, Holland was most often linked in thought to wooden shoes and edam cheese. That is, until the appearance of Shocking Blue in late 1969. These three Dutchmen stormed the U.S. charts, accompanied by the gravelly voice of lead singer Mariska Veres, a Gypsy's daughter. Their hit song, Venus, became a smash success in both England and the United States. This European import turned the shaggy heads of a mainland audience geared towards more rebellious, hallucinatory anthems. That is not to say that Shocking Blue didn't produce a modicum of gut-level rock.Their music combined a tasty blend of powerful guitar work with fiery lyrics. The beautiful lead singer, Mariska Veres, had an elegant way of grating out vocals. Sort of like getting punched with a white glove. She managed to reach deep into Robby Van Leuwen's lyrics, wringing the smiling harshness of our phrases like, "A Goddes,-; on a mountaintop was burning like a silver flame." One can almost hear the iabored breath and sec the swirling paisley pants and dressez of frenetic teenagers dancing to Shocking Blue_ Who hasn't seen the bowed, dancing heads of kids moving to deep bass undertones iike —roc.iuced by Klasse van Der Wal? Shocking Blue's style was like their name: garishiy eleciric. Their flashy, flambouyant clotes and rock hard approach to music seemed to mirror the times. And, although it has only been a few short years, their style of music seems somehow lost forever. Not because groups today lack the ability. It's more like they lack the experienoes gave music from that era its shockind edge.
